Dokuz Eylul University was established in 1982. It is currently one of the largest state universities in Turkey, with over 60.000 enrolled students. With its diverse opportunities, DEU has accommodated hundreds of international students for many years. DEU now has 13 faculties, 10 institutes, 1 conservatory, 3 graduate schools, 1 School of Foreign Languages providing foreign language education, 6 vocational schools and 49 research centers, making a total of 83 education institutions, together with 3129 academic staff - 616 professors, 296 associate professors, 568 assistant professors, 955 research assistants, 357 lecturers, 153 specialists and 184 instructors - and 3357 administrative staff. DEU has joined the Erasmus Exchange Program and so far has signed 282 bilateral agreements with 218 universities. In total, 920 outgoing students and 411 incoming students have participated in the program at DEU. DEU offers double major and minor programs in the Faculty of Business, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Letters and minor programs in some departments of the Faculty of Science. The Dokuz Eylul University Distant Learning Research and Application Center conducts distant learning opportunities on the internet (deuzem.deu.edu.tr) for students who prefer courses independent from time and location constraints.

The Department of International Relations was founded in 1992 within the Faculty of Business at Dokuz Eylul University. The department educates students on the theories of international relations and general debates in political science. The department focuses on the following subfields: International Relations, Comparative Politics, Diplomatic History, International Law, EU Law, EU Politics and Regional Studies. The medium of instruction is English. The department has 4 professors, 2 associate professors, 7 assistant professors, 1 PhD, 5 research assistants (PhD candidates). Most of the faculty members has either received their graduate degrees or conducted research for extended periods in Europe or North America. The department has organized two international conferences, five national workshops, and a plethora of guest lectures to date. The department also offers courses in International Summer School held by Faculty of Business at Dokuz Eylul University.
